The Story
My colleague Joy and I have worked with 100’s of mental health first aiders and our experience has provided these insights;
Many people do Mental Health First Aider training with the aim of supporting others but lack the confidence or skills to reach out to colleagues
The MHFA course is a solid knowledge base but it lacks a framework to help people convert their learning into effective routines and habits that support organisational wellbeing
Our thought process was simple; how can we help Mental Health First Aiders bring their aims to life? How can we help convert this ‘hidden army’ into proactive teams that make a meaningful impact on organistion mental wellbeing?
Thus Stronger Teams MHFA was born. After three pilots with a university, national charity and NHS hospital we have learnt which techniques prove most effective. How MHFA’s want structure to their role and recognition for their efforts. How much more impactful a team can be over a group of individuals.
One surprising thing we learnt? That a structured team of MHFA’s can help plug the skills gap that many managers experience (great technical skills, uncertain people skills). Instead of avoiding a conversation with a team member through fear of getting it wrong, they have a destination they can confidently signpost them to. Making it much easier for a team member to get useful help sooner.
